Good things to know

Sweden
Facts
Sweden
Sweden is one of the largest countries in Europe covering more than five percent of the European landmass, although it is only home to less than two percent of the European population. The summers are mild and light and the winters often icy and dark, especially in northern Sweden which lies above the Polar Circle. There, whole months pass in daylight while others are always dark. Sweden is a constitutional monarchy and we like to think of our society as being a social paradise. The ruling monarch is Carl XVII Gustaf. Public transport and the road system are of high quality. Credit cards are very widely used, even for the smallest purchases. Also, you will find that most people in Sweden speak good English. We Swedes can at times be a little bit shy with strangers, but are usually very friendly if you take the first step to start conversation!

History
Sweden

Some 10,000 years ago Sweden was still covered in ice, and as it thawed, the land was gradually inhabited. Swedes eventually became known as Vikings. By the end of the first millennium a centralized government had begun to develop, under the rule of a King, and the people were Christianized. With the advent of Protestantism in the 16th century, Catholicism was abandoned. Sweden became known and feared as a warlike nation in the 17th century, when its borders extended much further than they do now. For the past two centuries Sweden has been at peace with its neighbours. Our society provides free schooling for all and virtually free health care, as well as full care for the elderly.

Public Transportation
Travel in Stockholm
Arlanda, Stockholm’s International Airport, is less than 40 minutes from town by car. There is also a high speed train, Arlanda Express, that leaves you in the city center. The city of Stockholm is excellent for strolling, especially on the island we call Old Town, where you will find the Royal Palace as well as the Stockholm Cathedral. You can walk across Old Town, which we call Gamla Stan, in less than half an hour. Stockholm’s metro and boat system, called Stockholms Lokaltrafik, SL, sells advance tickets for the public transportations system.
